r.i.p. Ping
this is really sad. today around noon, we found our cat Ping dead on the side of our carriage house.... at first thought she was hit by a car, but she didn't feel broken bodied. I checked out under her fur, and saw a small wound which looked like a BB shot. the cops were called, they came & took a report - they'd been in the neighborhood just 3 days ago because a dog was shot (it lived) 2 houses down from us. so there's a sick fuck shooting animals in our neighborhood. neither Kim or I realized that the dog was shot on our street - if we had, we would've kept Ping in. she was x-rayed, and they found a pellet in her lung - bled to death internally.since this a.m., 2 local stations have interviewed us (KDKA and WPXI) so if you're watching the news in Pittsburgh tonight, you'll see us telling the story.

localfeeds
if you have a blog with an rss feed and geoUrl metadata, it is likely being picked up by localfeeds... my posts are being listed for pittsburgh, and I know I didn't submit for inclusion. cool anyways though.redesign
worked out a new look for the site this a.m.... ditched the unused cam section in the header and added an image rotator, new color scheme, flipped my links to the right side. header images are from our mx. trip.November 16, 2003
back from the yucatan
an excellent trip overall, just one problem the whole time... more on that in a sec. great (& cheap) food in Merida, friendly people everywhere, afternoon downpours, an awesome beach in Tulum, awe inducing ruins in Chichen Itza & Tulum, saw monkeys in the jungle in Puenta Laguna. pics are here.the only bad thing was having our debit card cloned & pin number spyed on inside a bank in Tulum 2 days before coming home... when we got home & checked our transactions from the trip on our bank site, we found that my whole paycheck (which had been direct deposited that day) was withdrawn while we were flying home! we'll get the money back after filing a dispute with the bank... but the inital shock of finding out was very disturbing. it happens to travellers often... our guard was down after having nothing but a great experience, and we wuz had.
I'll be calling a mexican consulate to report it... but hard to say where it will go from there. it's doubtful that I'll report it to the mx. cops in Tulum though, as rumor is that they're corrupt, and given that the bank and the police station in Tulum are in the same building... I wouldn't put it past them to be in on the scam & I don't want to raise any red flags down there because we're definitely visiting again.
