Mac OS 9.1's vDSP accelerates multimedia for G4
According to reports recently filed by Apple beta testers, Mac OS 9.1's "vDSP" feature, designed to accelerate numerous multimedia functions and applications, is no small matter. In some cases, particularly where MPEG video or MP3 audio is concerned, the Altivec unit on PowerMac G4s does virtually all the work, leaving the rest of the processor ready to do other work. This has resulted in QuickTime playback acceleration of up to 100% on large movie files, and when playing several MP3s simultaneously, one tester noticed that a Photoshop gaussian blur filter run in the background completed in 1/3rd the time compared to OS 9.0.4 on his PowerMac G4/500 SP. Waging War on Political Dissent
Calling for the federal government to prosecute those who engage in nonviolent civil disobedience could intimidate many people from participating in protests. Many Americans will be afraid that they will get caught up in a federal investigation. It's worth stressing that many Americans are, given the events of Seattle, D.C., Philadelphia, and Los Angeles, justifiably afraid of federal response; further, justifiable fear on the part of Americans at the risks of political expression is unjustifiable, in fact, intolerable in a healthy democracy. ... When nonviolent civil disobedience is treated as if it were mere lawlessness, when its avowed political context is denied or distorted, when dissent from the political mainstream is criminalized, the formation of an oppressive political climate is the result.

apache on mac osX: Apache server software on verge of major revision
The new version is a major overhaul of the software, which resides on servers and sends Web pages to people browsing the Internet. The current version is at home on Linux and Unix machines but underwent some contortions to adapt to Windows machines. The new version, though, is much more portable and will work on Windows as well as BeOS, OS/2 and eventually Mac OS as well, Bloom said.Other major improvements include higher performance and more flexibility for handling jobs such as supporting Web browsing from wireless gadgets.

philly protest update
Guards, police, and administrators continue to attack protestors in jail, seeking to demoralize and divide. There has been one sexual assault, by a female officer who pulled and twisted a prisoner's penis. One released activist reports men have been dragged face down through a 'trash trough' containing refuse, spittle, and urine. Arrestees have been verbally abused, punched, kicked, thrown against walls, bloodied, dragged naked across floors.

Yes, he was elected governor of Texas, and before that he ran a baseball team and lost a lot of other people's money in the oil business. But what has happened in the intervening five years to make people believe he'd be a good president? What is his accomplishment? That he's no longer an obnoxious drunk?"

Please design and build me a house. I am not quite sure of what I need, so you should use your discretion. My house should have somewhere between two and forty-five bedrooms. Just make sure the plans are such that the bedrooms can be easily added or deleted... I advise you to run up and look at my neighbor's house he constructed last year. We like it a great deal. It has many features that we would also like in our new home, particularly the 75-foot swimming pool. With careful engineering, I believe that you can design this into our new house without impacting the final cost...
