installed a random quote perl script (that's the output above).
wondering what's the best way to efficiently handle text using html, css, xml, perl ? what are the conflicts/ redundancies/ available options? one of the points here is to find a programming solution that in combination will make it easy to control the typographic & stylistic design of an idiot-proof, dynamic, client-updated site.

pilot whale tracking site, Mystic aquarium - tagged whales transmitter data posted on web (whales were rescued from a beaching in June) see where they are from day to day (transmitter batteries will quit in Feb. 2000)

420:
Feds Want Marijuana Ruling Reviewed: "The Justice Department on Wednesday [10.27] asked a federal appeals court to reconsider a ruling that could allow seriously ill patients to use marijuana without being prosecuted. [...] In its ruling last month, the appeals court said the government has offered nothing to contradict "evidence that cannabis is the only effective treatment for a large group of seriously ill individuals."

word:
from the article 'The Decline and Fall of Literature': "But it is also true that many "traditional" students (the new term for those who used to be referred to as "college age") are turning away from literature in particular and from the humanities in general already in high school. Among the millions who take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), usually given in the tenth grade, only 9 percent indicate interest in the humanities."

wonder what would happen if we asked, 'how many have an interest in Tommy Hilfiger'?

420:
a breakdown of the major presidental candidate's views about medical marijuana: "George W. Bush's comment in support of states' rights on medical marijuana makes him the second most supportive [Republican] presidential candidate. The most supportive declared candidate is Pat Buchanan [no longer a Republican!]. During the last presidential campaign, Pat Buchanan was asked, "Would you support the medical use of marijuana?" He responded, "If a doctor indicated to his patient that this was the only way to alleviate certain painful symptoms  ... I would defer to the doctor's judgement." Donald Trump, who is considering a bid for the Reform Party nomination, would be the most supportive candidate if he formally declares his candidacy, in that he has come out in the past in favor of marijuana "decriminalization," thereby opposing the policy of jailing sick or healthy marijuana users. Unfortunately, Bill Bradley, a former marijuana user, recently said he wouldn't change the medical marijuana laws now, thereby endorsing the status quo of arresting and incarcerating seriously ill people. And there is little hope that Al Gore, also a former marijuana user, will be much better. Vice President Gore, who has been with the Clinton administration for more than six years, has not separated himself from the views of the administration, which has waged the most vicious war on medical marijuana users of any presidential administration." losing it:
"President Clinton played a full 18 holes of golf on Sunday evening -- all by himself in the rain!

Clinton completed a full round in pitch dark at a deserted Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va., in a development one Clinton insider called: "odd."  [via drudge]

...I suppose if Bill were a total schizophrenic it would have shown up by now, but this, if nothing else, makes room for doubt as per the man's personal togetherness.

hacking happens:
"The low cost of computer crime software and hardware combined with the dramatic expansion of the Internet into new, lesser- developed regions of the world promises to exacerbate the hacking problem. There are roughly three times as many people using wireless phone services as there are people on the Internet, so there is possibility for an online explosion once a wireless Internet is established. "  (business news)

lots of helpful hacking tips in the article.

.cgi madness:
after 2 weeks of looking for .cgi shopping cart scripts, a week of installing & removing scrips that didn't fit my needs for flexibility of design and ease of management, and a final 16 hour caffeine push, I've found the script I need with commerce.cgi.  it supports hundreds of products (broken down into categories), the cgi generated shopping cart pages are relatively easy to control for appearance, and editing the product database is a breeze compared to other script packages.
